The communal bank "14 DE SEPTIEMBRE" is beginning its second loan cycle in the Pro Mujer program at the Social Center of Copacabana. The group is comprised of nine members whose management board is led by Alicia, the president. The different businesses carried out by the members include: clothing, cattle, milk and bread sales.

The loan being requested will benefit the group of small business owners of which Alicia is a member. She says she has been a part of Pro Mujer for seven months and joined after a promoter from the institution visited her at home. She currently runs a bakery which she started on her own initiative several years ago, and is still in the same business.

The loan is to buy flour at the markets in the city of El Alto which she will use to make the products she sells at stores in nearby villages. The work gives her enough income to maintain her household. She is married and has three children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she says it is the fact that loans are granted quickly without hesitation.

One of the members does not appear in the photograph because she had to be at work.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
