Nurije
Nurije is a fifty-year-old widow. She has five grown children and lives with her children in the Ashkali community. Nurie owns a small, old house that is in need of renovation. It has not had any repairs or renovations in the last several years.

The household's current main source of income comes from her son, who works for a water company for a very low salary. Her house has old doors and windows, which causes a problem in that the house then loses much heat. Every winter it costs a lot of money to buy the coal to keep the house warm. The family always feels cold and gets sick in the winter due to the lack of heat.

Nurije needs a loan to buy new doors and windows for the house. This renovation will allow her family to live a normal and healthy life. She really appreciates help from Kiva lenders!

More information about this loan

This loan will support the economic aspirations of minority people in Kosovo. Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment. By supporting this loan you are helping provide opportunity to marginalized populations.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
