Alicia is married. She is forty years old, completed one year of primary education, and has six children. Four of them are in school. She works growing coffee crops and started her business by purchasing some small coffee plants with her husband. They later purchased more and more plants and she now has ten years of experience.

She organizes a group and is requesting a loan. She will use it to purchase fertilizer for her coffee crops. She wants to have more land in the future, and more coffee plants so that she may obtain a greater harvest.

Some of the other members of this group work growing coffee beans and corn, and others work weaving. Twelve members appear in the photo, but only eleven were granted the loan.

La señora Alicia de estado civil casada tiene 40 años de edad, curso 1 año de educación primaria, tiene 6 hijos y 4 de ellos estan estudiando, ella se dedica a la siembra de café, inició este negocio comprando una plantitas de café con su esposo, luego compraron otras y luego otras y hasta la fecha lleva ya 10 años de experiencia.

Organiza un grupo y solicita un préstamo que lo utilizará para la compra de fertilizante para hecharle a su cultivo de café, en el futuro desea tener mas terreno con mas planta de café y asi obtener más cosecha; las demás integrantes del grupo se dedican a sembrar café, maíz y otras se dedican a tejer. en la fotografía aparecen 12 integrantes pero solo a 11 se les concedió el préstamo.

About Asociación ASDIR

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans. Today ASDIR has 5 offices across 3 departments (Totonicapán, Sololá and Suchitepéquez) serving more than 6,000 clients, most of them in rural communities.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
