Cristóbal is a farmer. He sows, maintains and produces corn on his plot located in the village where he lives. He chose this business because of an inheritance from his father and also because it generates food for his family, as corn is the basis of the diet in his community. It also generates income because he sells part of the production (the surplus) in the local market. He has 25 years of experience with this work.
He is asking for a loan for the purchase of improved fertilizer for the maintenance of his corn. With the earnings he obtains, he dreams of improving his family's quality of life, buying them clothing and giving them an education.

About ADICLAADICLA (Association for the Holistic Development of the Basin of Lake Atitlán) is nonprofit rural community development association that provides small loans and services to improve quality of life in two of the poorest regions of Guatemala, home to large indigenous populations. Kiva funding will be used to support three innovative credit initiatives: youth business loans, green loans, and smaller loans to help ADICLA move down-market and serve poorer clients.
This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
