He started this business in order to generate income to sustain his family. He has 20 years of experience and he has the support of his wife who works with him on the farm.

He organizes a group and they decided to request a loan that will be used to purchase supplies, such as fertilizer and seeds for their crops. In the future they hope to have better and bountiful harvests every year.

The other members of the group work in agriculture, growing coffee, corn and beans. In the photo there are 11 people, but only 7 of them were given the loan.

El señor Carlos de estado vicil casado tiene 46 años de edad, curso los 6 años de educacion primaria, tiene 9 hijos y de ellos 5 estan estudiando, él se dedica a la agricultura, inició este negocio por la necesidad de generar ingresos económicos para sostener a su familia y hasta la fecha lleva 20 años de experiencia, cuenta con el apoyo de su esposa quien lo ayuda en la agricultura.

Organiza un grupo y decide solitar un préstamo que lo utilizará para la compra de insumos, como: fertilizante, semillas para sus cosechas, en el futuro desea tener mejores y abundantes cosechas cada año; los demás integrantes del grupo se dedican a la agricultura, sembrado café, maíz y frijol. En la fotografía aparecen 11 personas pero solamente a 7 de ellos se les concedió el préstamo.

About Asociación ASDIR

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans. Today ASDIR has 5 offices across 3 departments (Totonicapán, Sololá and Suchitepéquez) serving more than 6,000 clients, most of them in rural communities.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
