The ‘La Luz del Saber’ [The Light of Knowledge] group is located in a very peaceful community that is known for its Mazahuas culture and traditions. The people in this community still speak the mother tongue, Mazahua. The group is comprised of nine people who are very hard-working and responsible people. Ángel, Lilia, Moisés, Filiberta, Ofelia, Isabel, David, and Claudia decided upon the name because for them, upon starting a new loan, they had never had knowledge about the topic.

Gregoria is a member of the group. She is a very happy woman, but above all, she is very hard-working. She is a 58 year old widow. She does not now have any dependent children. However, she is also the one who takes care of her grandson’s expenses.

Gregoria has had a grocery store for 38 years. She started it because there were not any stores where you could buy groceries. That is how Gregoria and her husband decided to set up a grocery store. This time she is requesting the loan to stock her grocery store. She will buy milk, soft drinks, bread, eggs, sugar, and salt, etc. The only difficulty she currently has is the great amount of competition in her community, which has greatly reduced her sales.

Gregoria needs a refrigerator in her store in order to start selling dairy products, yogurt, cream, cheese, and ham, etc. This would help her to increase her profits and, this way, improve her family’s quality of life. Gregoria’s only goal is to have her grocery store full again, to have everything, and to never again tell her customers that she does not have what they are asking for.

Lilia, Moisés, Ángel, Filiberta, Ofelia, and Isabel will buy household products. Aurora will invest in her grocery store. Claudia and David will invest in their taxi.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
