Beverline, age 38, owns and operates a shop where she sells artificial hair. She started her business with money given to her by her husband and has run her venture for the past three years. On average, she works nine hours per day. Beverline transports her merchandise by taxi. She cites the rainy season as her biggest challenge. Her favorite part of her business is the flow of customers.
Beverline lives with her husband and their three children in St. Paul, a suburb located just outside Monrovia, past the Freeport. St. Paul is home to the oldest market in Liberia and is known for its fish, due to its location by the sea. It is one of the poorer areas of the country and you will often find its residents living in sub-standard housing.
Beverline's husband sells gasoline to earn an income. Their children are between the ages of five and 18 years old. All three are enrolled in school and living at home. Beverline herself completed 12 grades of school.
She will use her loan funds to purchase inventory for her shop. In the future, she would like to build a house for the family to live in.
