A loan of $500 helped to pay for a water pump that will be used for irrigation.

Patrick's story

Patrick, 46, is a farmer with four children from the farming area of Chibombo District, Zambia. He is asking for a Kiva loan to buy a water pump so that he can irrigate his farm.

Patrick has been supplying markets in Zambia’s Copperbelt region for the past fifteen years. An experienced farmer, he he produces tomatoes, watermelons, cucumbers, and butternut squash. While his business is growing at a fast rate, his farm currently relies on hiring an engine pump from a neighbor. If the pump is not available, Patrick must irrigate by hand and his yields can suffer.

Equipment such as a water pump can be a major boost for many vegetable farmers such as Patrick, as it allows for increased production and more predictable yields due to irrigation. Unfortunately, the upfront costs of such a water pump can be very prohibitive, even for successful and experienced farmers like Patrick. Once he secures a loan, Patrick will be able to get a water pump from Rent-to-Own, which will deliver the equipment to his farm, as well as provide training on how to use and maintain it.

With a pump, Patrick can irrigate a larger portion of land in less time and not have to wait to hire a pump from his neighbour. He will be able to increase his yields, and be able to sell more of his crops to the lucrative markets in the Copperbelt region.

It is for this reason Patrick is asking Kiva lenders to help him with the loan so that he can secure a water pump as soon as possible.
