Lysel is a 38-year-old woman, a widow with two children. For four years, she has been purchasing coconut shell in the community of Capucao, Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, to produce charcoal for sale in the market. She earns PHP 2,500 a month from this business. In 2009, she joined GDMPC to gain access to microfinance. Recently, she borrowed PHP 4,000 to buy additional coconut shell to produce more charcoal for sale. In the future, she wants to use her revenues to repair their house to provide better shelter for her children.
Gata Daku Multi-Purpose Cooperative (GDMPC) was founded in 1992 by 32 farmer-members to empower people by providing livelihood opportunities and other support services. Today, it has over 15,000 members located in upland, lowland and coastal regions of the Philippines, and offers credit, savings, education, and various social services.
