Josiane D. was born on July 9, 1970 in Lokossa, in the Mono province of southwest Benin. Married to Victor Kpanou, a refrigerating engineer by profession, she is the mother of three children. Mindful of her role in the family and being without any sort of occupational training, five years ago she plunged into distribution of various products, in particular, women’s handbags, shoes, soap, and shirts, amongst others. At the outset, she marketed food products, but she discontinued that practice because she found it too cumbersome and instead went into traveling sales. Thanks to the income from that business, she has been able to assist her husband in supporting the family. Initially she purchased her inventory at the Dantokpa international market in Cotonou, but now, she finds it more profitable to head for the Lome city market in the neighboring country of Togo, where merchandise is less expensive. At present she is requesting her seventh loan, and asks for $300 to grow her business.

About Alidé

Alidé is a Beninese NGO that works to reduce poverty by offering sustainable access to productive loans like this one in addition to savings, training sessions, and social work to low-income families.

Supporters of this loan should be aware that there is some risk of being repaid late. Because the Beninois Ministry of Finance has imposed restrictions on the amount of money Alidé can send to Kiva, the organization can only send monthly repayments in installments smaller than $13,000. This means that some Kiva lenders may receive their repayments late. However, Alidé remains a healthy institution in good standing with its creditors, and Kiva would like to continue working to support its clients.
