María finished primary school thanks to her parents’ help, but she could not continue studying because of the lack of money and her parents’ difficult economic situation. They taught her to grow potatoes, something she has been doing for many years, growing also corn and beans. She and her husband own the land where they work, thanks to their effort. It is located 3 km away from their house and they walk every day in order to give maintenance to the crops, which are to be sold in the local market, to some customers from the area.
María needs help to buy compost, leaf nutrients and fertilizers for her potato plantations, which will keep them safe and help to avoid plagues and bugs that could harm them.
María's dream is to improve her family’s quality of life, giving her children the opportunity to study in order to be the best they can be. Also, to ensure them all the opportunities and good conditions for a better professional performance, considering that they will inherit the legacy that she and her husband are strengthening.
More information about this loan
These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
