Abla
Ms. Abla S. is a 37-year-old, illiterate woman who is married to a man with no income. She is the mother of four children who also takes care of two of her sisters. Her business consists of selling fried fish and “gari” (cassava flour). There are periods when there is an abundance of gari (the rainy season) and prices fall and periods when there is very little gari (the dry season) and prices jump because the supply falls.

Ms. S. is requesting a loan of $1000 to buy barrels in order to stock gari in times of abundance and to earn a maximum profit from sales during the dry season. The loan will allow this courageous and enterprising woman to make her business profitable and get out of the vicious cycle of poverty in which she and her family are caught.
