Sandra buys and sells handbags and pocketbooks for women. She and her mother started this business with little capital. Sandra now has 10 years of experience and is able to support her family.

She organized a group and decided to request a loan so that she can invest in the purchase of four dozen handbags and one dozen pocketbooks of different styles and colors. Sandra will be able to restock her shop. In the near future, she would like for her business to prosper on a grand scale.

The other group members are small businesspeople who sell products through catalogs, sell shoes, sell bread, and work as a taxi driver. The photograph shows seven people, but only five of them were granted a loan.

About Asociación ASDIR

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans. Today ASDIR has 5 offices across 3 departments (Totonicapán, Sololá and Suchitepéquez) serving more than 6,000 clients, most of them in rural communities.
