Maira is a happy, enterprising, hardworking, 32-year-old woman who completed secondary school and has had some university courses. She’s in a common law relationship and has a daughter who is completely dependent on her and her spouse. Her spouse gives her moral and economic support. She and he work in agriculture, specifically growing and producing coffee. She learned how to grow and plant coffee many years ago from her parents who helped her to reach her goal of becoming educated and graduating from secondary school. She’s a woman who has been noted by her family members, friends and neighbors as being very hardworking, tenacious, responsible and honest. The land she and her spouse cultivate was passed down to her from her parents and is located a kilometer away from their house; they reach it on foot.

Today, she’s asking for help to improve her coffee production buying manure, fertilizer and other supplies that lead to a healthier, more productive coffee crop to be sold in the local market so that she will earn higher income for her family this way.

Her dream is to be able to provide a good university career for her daughter that will make her a better person each day so that she will have the knowledge needed to create businesses or firms that will generate employment and that every day that passes they will be better.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
