The communal bank "PERLAS DE ORO" (Pearls of Gold) will begin its second term in Pro Mujer (Pro Women), part of a Regional Office in the state of Germán Busch. It is composed of eight members and it is run by an executive board in which Alicia is the president. The members operate a variety of businesses, including the sales of quilts, bed sheets, fruit, and fish; a bakery; the decoration of footstools; and the crocheting of blankets.

The loan that they will take out will benefit the microbusinesses of which Alicia is one member. She said that they joined Pro Mujer six months ago at the invitation of her sister, who is a member of the institution. Her current business is artisan crocheting. She said it began as a family business several years ago.

This loan will be used to increase her capital through the purchase of wool, which she will obtain from the traditional markets in the city of El Alto and later used in her craft, which she will sell wholesale by order. This type of work helps her earn income to support her home as much as possible, as she is married and has four children.

When asked what she liked about Pro Mujer, she replied that she liked the loans and the savings.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
