Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT), a partner of Kiva in Sierra Leone, is very pleased to present to you Mohamed, a 30-year-old resourceful husband and father working hard to provide for his family.
Mohamed has been working at a local sugar company for the past 9 years. At the same time, Mohamed invests in agriculture and grows rice. He is requesting a loan of 2,500,000 SSL from SMT to pay laborers to prepare his land for planting. With the approaching rainy season, now is the perfect time to plow the land and prepare the planting fields. Not only is Mohamed creating jobs in his local community, but he is also continuing to strive for a better life for his wife and 5 children.
Through partnering with local companies, SMT is able to provide borrowers like Mohamed with microloans that are repaid through payroll deduction.
About Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT)
Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is Kiva’s oldest field partner in Sierra Leone. SMT began operations in 2002 as a microcredit program of the NGO Child Fund Sierra Leone under a USAID program to assist the reintegration of ex combatants back into their communities. Today, SMT offers group, agricultural, individual and salary loans to micro-entrepreneurs through six branches and one sub-branch in rural, urban, and peri-urban areas. By providing small loans and other financial services, SMT empowers poor clients to generate more income to help their families, improve their wellbeing, and create a more vibrant private small-business sector in Sierra Leone.
