Benkan Group

Married mainly in traditional extended families, the four women of the group BENKAN are on average 43 years old and have 6 children. They all live in the town of Santoro de San in the region of Ségou (4th administrative region of Mali) and met through neighborhood, professional business and family ties. They buy and sell vegetables, clothing, fish and do catering. With the goal of satisfying the needs of their clientele which is more and more numerous and demanding, the members of the group decided to join the loan program of Soro Yiriwaso and are on their 12th loan in solidarity, after having correctly repaid the two previous loans.

Madam Maimouna, president of the association (2nd from the right to the left) excels in the sale of rich and wax damask fabrics. She is very much in demand in her neighborhood and at the large market.

She plans to use her loan to buy 50 pieces of wax damask fabrics and 4 pieces of rich damask fabrics in Bamako. She carries out her sales for cash, retail and for credit to a mixed clientele.

With this loan, Madam Maimouna hopes to make an average monthly profit of 70,000 FCFA which will be used to be reinvested in her business and to help her spouse in taking care of the needs of the home.

Mariées majoritairement dans des familles traditionnelles élargies, les quatre femmes du groupe BENKAN ont en moyenne 43 ans et 6 enfants. Elles habitent toutes le village Santoro de San dans la région de Ségou (4ème région administrative du Mali) et se sont connues à travers des liens de voisinage, de leurs activités professionnelles et de parenté. Elles font l’achat et la vente de légumes, d’habits de poissons et de la restauration.
Dans le but de satisfaire le besoin de leurs clientèles de plus en plus nombreuses et exigeantes, les membres du groupe ont décidé d’intégrer le programme crédit de Soro Yiriwaso et sont à leur 12eme prêt solidaire, après avoir correctement remboursés les deux précédents.
Madame, MAIMOUNA présidente de l’association (2 eme de la droite vers la gauche) excelle la vente de Bazin riche et wax. Elle est très sollicitée dans le quartier et au grand marché.
Elle compte utiliser son prêt pour acheter, 50 pièces de wax ,4 pièces de Bazin riches à Bamako. Elle effectue ses ventes au comptant, en détail et à crédit à une clientèle mixtes.
Avec ce prêt, Madame MAIMOUNA espère réaliser un bénéfice mensuel moyen de 70000 FCFA qui sera utilisé pour être réinvesti dans l’activité et aider son conjoint dans la prise en charge des besoins du foyer.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee.
