Francis is married and has six children, five of whom are still in school. They live in Kisii. He has been a farmer for twenty three years producing and selling bananas, maize, milk, and beans. He currently runs his farm with the help of one farmhand.
He has requested a loan from Juhudi Kilimo of KES. 62,400 to purchase and insure a dairy cow, in order to increase his milk production. This will improve his family's income and hence help his family to have an adequate supply of food. He expects a high yield and an improved level of milk production. Lack of a local market and lack of storage facilities are the major problems he is encountering.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
