Age 40 and a local citizen from Battambang province, Chanthorn is married and has five children. Currently, only two children are under her dependency as they are still in school. To overcome the family’s daily basic needs, she and her husband do corn and rice cropping on five hectares area; the business that she has been with for six years and is able to earn up to 32,200 KHR per day.

This is the first loan for Chanthorn’s group of two female members. For this loan, she is requesting the amount of 1,500,000 KHR whereas her co-borrower is applying for 650,000 KHR. As the group leader, she will use her loan portion to pay for plowing fees, and to buy rice seeds, fertilizer, and insecticide. She hopes to increase her income so that she can keep her children in school.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
