Ramona Del Socorro
Ramona lives in the village of Condega some 35 kilometers north of the city of Estelí. She is a single mother who lives in her own home along with her daughters, whom she has raised and educated on her own for a very long time. She has made a living as a caretaker at a home for the past six years, which provides her with continuity and stability. She works Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on the weekends she travels to some of the surrounding communities to sell all kinds of clothing as well as cosmetics. She came to the offices of Kiva partner CEPRODEL requesting a loan to belong to the water and sanitation alliance. This will allow her to build a bathroom that will include a toilet, shower and sink as well as a septic tank, since the current conditions aren't very good. In this way she will have these essential services inside her home and have a more dignified place to live with improved conditions, since the latrines contaminate the environment and through this project she will be able to enjoy better health and hygiene and avoid illnesses. This program targets the lowest class, because without this funding it would be impossible to build these services.

Eligible recipients include clients and families who live in very poor regions of Nicaragua, lack access to water, or are employed making handicrafts or as roving salespeople. Along with these loans, clients receive environmental education training from the World Bank to better understand how plumbing interacts with the local ecosystem. By supporting this loan, you are making a difference in a country where 48% of the population lacks access to proper sanitation.

This loan is administered by Centro de Promocion del Desarrollo Local (CEPRODEL), one of Kiva’s larger partners in Central America. Founded in 1991 and based in Managua, Nicaragua, CEPRODEL specializes in the development and funding of housing cooperatives for traditionally marginalized communities, the provision of microfinance services to small businesses, and the promotion of innovative renewable energy projects. In addition, unlike many microfinance institutions in the area that have chosen to avoid the rural areas of the country due to the increased financial risk, CEPRODEL provides financial services to numerous clients in the agriculture and livestock industry. Supporting a borrower through CEPRODEL means contributing to the promotion and sustainability of this important work in Nicaragua.
