Julia’s single and has no children; she’s the third of five siblings. She had to take charge of her younger siblings and this is why she has neither a spouse nor children. She lives rent-free in a house belonging to some cousins. She has four rooms: kitchen, bathroom, a small bedroom and a small living room that contains her sewing workshop. The house is brick finished in stucco and the floor is cement; the house is located in the city of El Alto’s Nuevos Horizontes zone.

She currently works as a seamstress making athletic sweatshirts but she’s currently doing the assembling with a straight-stitch sewing machine; she’s paid by the piece and she pays her transportation and food costs. She needs the loan to buy an overlock sewing machine to increase production and income.

Julia dreams with having her own little house to improve her and her siblings’ quality of life. This is the first time she’s requested credit from IMPRO and KIVA.

Additional Information

IMPRO is a small non-profit organization that has been offering micro credit to the working poor in the Bolivian cities of La Paz and El Alto since 1995. IMPRO’s goal is to fight poverty by offering loans to small business owners who cannot access credit through the regular banking system due to a lack of guarantees or collateral.

To ensure that everyone has access to credit, IMPRO maintains a low interest rate by minimizing operational costs. IMPRO’s partnership with Kiva, which began in 2007, has allowed IMPRO to expand its services while maintaining these low interest rates.
