N. Hadija is 32 years old, married and the mother of five children who range in age from 16 to 23. She makes a living selling fruits and vegetables, including oranges, bananas and tomatoes, in a market about a mile from her home. She is there seven days a week from first light at 7 a.m. until the end of the day, and reports that her business is profitable.

Hadija is the leader of a group of four. She has been a member of MCDT since 2002 and has received 13 previous loans. With a new loan, she will be able to buy more produce for her stand at the market and pay school fees so that her children can go to school. Her goal for the future is to buy a plot of land and build a house so she will no longer have to pay rent.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
