Sopheap is 44 years old and a local villager from Takeo province. To deal with the daily cost of living, she farms rice on a total of five hectares of farmland. She has been a farmer for twenty years.

Sopheap has taken out three loans through VisionFund, Kiva’s partner. She has managed her past loans effectively enough to be able to both support her farming and set aside some money for her children. Now she is applying for a 1600 USD education loan to pay for her children’s tuition.

Sopheap hopes to provide financial support for her children so they can get good educations and find good jobs to help support the entire family.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of VisionFund Cambodia’s higher education program, designed to provide financing to students in poor households who otherwise lack the financial support to continue their studies. Very few students have the financial resources necessary to go to college. VisionFund Cambodia has designed a lower-interest rate loan product for students, given the financial benefits associated with financing this loan upfront on Kiva. It is disbursed to the borrower in annual installments.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
