Originally from Banteay Meanchey province of Cambodia, Phearum is 24 years old and is living with her parents. She supports the family business, growing cassava. For extra profit, her family also provides a paid-plowing service in the local area. Phearum has five siblings, but her parents can afford to send only three children to school since their household income is limited.

Phearum has never been with VisionFund Cambodia (Kiva’s partner) before. She keens to pursue a four-year, bachelor degree program, majoring in Finance and Banking. Therefore, she has decided to take an education loan from VisionFund Cambodia, as a first time borrower.

She hopes that this loan will provide sufficient capital to support her studying, so she can pay more attention to her study and obtain a good job after graduation, in order to relieve the family’s financial burden.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
