Alex is forty-four years of age, married, and has four children, one of whom still attends school. He resides in Nkubu, Meru Region of Eastern Kenya. He has been an active farmer for nine years and sells milk, maize, bananas and beans in the local market.
He has requested a loan from Juhudi Kilimo of KES 40,000 to purchase irrigation equipment so that there will be a continuous supply of water to his farm, and hence a good yield. This will uplift his family's living standards. In the future he wants to expand his business and add dairy farming.
Lack of good markets for his products and pests and diseases are the main challenges he faces in his business. Alex says that Juhudi Kilimo is the best microfinance Institution for him because of its efficiency.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
