Abednego is a resident of Nkubu, in the Meru Region of Eastern Kenya. He is 28 years old, married, and has one child who attends school. He has been a farmer for five years, growing tea and selling it to Kionyo Tea Factory. Besides farming, he owns a retail shop as an extra source of income.
He requested a loan from Juhudi Kilimo of KES 60,000 to be used to purchase poultry. This will help him increase his income sources further. In future, he would like to buy a car for his businesses. He faces challenges like unexpected climate changes and hence poor crop yields, and pests and diseases. He says that Juhudi Kilimo has very friendly staff.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow.
