Communal bank "SENKATA ALTA" will start its fifth cycle with Pro Mujer, part of the focal center of Senkata. The group is composed of ten members and directed by a board where Mrs. Susana is the president. Members perform different activities, such as selling cattle, weaving sweaters, selling potatoes and tunta [freeze-dried potatoes], and weaving blankets.

This loan will benefit women that are small entrepreneurs, such as Susana. She says that she has worked three cycles with Pro Mujer, and joined on the invitation of the institution’s promoter, who visited her at her house. Susana has a blanket weaving business. She started it when she noticed how good the demand for this product was.

This loan will increase her capital to buy wool from saleswomen that sell it in bulk in La Paz. After weaving the blankets, she will sell them in her establishment. This is how she generates income for her family; she lives in a common-law marriage and has two children. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she said that she likes the training programs in loans and health.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
