Lucy is a 53-year-old married mother of four. She resides in Nkubu in the Meru Region of Eastern Kenya. She has been in the farming business for the past 15 years. She sells milk, beans, bananas, maize, and tea leaves.
She has come to Juhudi Kilimo to request for a loan of 30,000 KES to be used to purchase piglets. She says that the pigs will help generate more income for the family. Besides rearing pigs, Lucy's vision is to rear 10 producing dairy cows.
The market there is unreliable thus posing a major challenge for her produce. She says that Juhudi needs to provide its clients with other products like emergency and school-fees loans.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
