Mrs. María is a humble and hardworking woman that walks the streets every day looking for customers for her delicious traditional desserts (buñuelos and sweet rice). She also sells used clothes. Her husband supports her and contributes with some of the home expenses. He works collecting and transporting different things on a cart. Her children help her also; they are all adult and independent.

María has used previous loans to build her house and now she wants to build some walls, make divisions in concrete and fix the floor. She will do this step by step, considering her current income. With this loan, she will try to buy as many materials as she can, like cement, bricks, sand and iron.

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
