Sokkhy, age 35, lives in the Ponhea Krek district of Kampong Cham province. He is the father of one schoolchild and two children who are too little for school. To feed his kids, he farms rice on 2.5 hectares of land, and cassava on 1.5 hectares. He has been able to earn about 40,000 KHR per day from the business, for nine years.
His first loan with VisionFund (Kiva’s partner) was four loan cycles ago. He has completely repaid his previous loan, which has supported his business and returned to him a decent income with which to support his family and keep his child in school. For this new loan cycle, he is going to use his loan to pay fees for plowing and transplanting, and to buy potash to use on his crop. He hopes to earn more income and to improve his living.
About VisionFund Cambodia
VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
