The ROSAS DE CRISTAL Communal Bank will start its sixth loan cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Senkata Regional Office. It is composed of thirteen members and led by a board of directors with Sra. Cristina as president. The businesses run by the members of the communal bank are diverse and include a locksmith, neighborhood store, sales of sweets, the preparation and sale of sweets, cosmetic sales, the raising and selling of pigs and a book shop.

The loan the group takes out will benefit small business people such as Sra. Cristina. She notes that she joined Pro Mujer six years ago on invitation from a recruiter who visited her house. Currently she runs a neighborhood store that she started on her own initiative several years ago when she noticed the lack of such businesses in her area.

The loan that she will take out is to increase her inventory (by purchasing canned goods and sugar), which she will acquire from wholesalers in the city of La Paz and later re-sell in her store. This kind of work enables her to generate an income to support her household since she lives in a common-law relationship and has two children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she responds that she enjoys the training workshops on health and loans, sharing with her co-members and the savings.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
