The Soberanas communal bank will start its first cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Panamericana regional office. It is comprised of seven members, and it is overseen by a board of directors. Zonia is the president. The members are involved in various businesses, including making jackets [sewing], selling clothes, selling school supplies [informational poster like sheets], selling livestock, knitting sweaters, and selling vegetables.

Their loan will benefit small business people like Zonia. She has been a member of Pro Mujer for three years. She joined by invitation from a representative of the institution who visited Zonia at her house. She currently has a business making jackets. She says that over eight years ago she helped in her siblings’ sewing shop. From this experience she learned the technique of sewing. Therefore, she decided to open her own workshop.

The loan that she will now take out is to increase capital to buy fabric. She will get the fabric from the companies in the city of La Paz. After she makes the jackets, she will sell them by order. This way of working allows her to generate resources in order to support her household as much as possible. She is married and has three children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answered that she likes all of the trainings.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
