Marc lives in the town of Trou-du-Nord in Haiti where electricity is scarce and water very limited. Marc has been managing his business for the last eight years. He would like to use this loan to invest in the purchase of charcoal.

Marc hopes that this loan will help him expand his business. He is unmarried and has five children. He is the coordinator of his group Tet Trankil of Saillant. The other members of Marc’s group need loans for such retail activity as the sale of charcoal, rice and fish. Marc says that his biggest challenge is the lack of steady customers.

He says his main goal is the growth of his business. His dream is to buy a motorcycle to transport supplies.

This loan is designed for a borrower or group of borrowers in Haiti. Esperanza is one of the few MFIs currently working in the northeast region of the country. Through lending, the organization aims to stimulate economic growth and opportunity in a country that has suffered debilitating crises, including political instability, natural disasters and poverty. Esperanza lends primarily to groups of women who cross-guarantee each other's loans. They also receive financial literacy courses and health services.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee.
