Gilberte is 43 years old and owns a cosmetics shop in the Kossodo neighborhood in Ouagadougou (capital of Burkina Faso). She has formed a partnership with Nafa Naana, a social enterprise that is being created by Entrepreneurs du Monde (Entrepreneurs of the World). The partnership started in July 2012 and involves the resale of products such as gas stoves, solar-powered lamps and warming baskets. In addition to those new items, she is also charged with selling replacement gaz tanks which allows her to help fellow women as well as improve her standard of living.
Recently, Gilberte has a financial challenge because so many of her customers are in need of solar-powerd lamps. The loan will help her to purchase 69 solar-powerd lamps for resale to her customers. This will satisfy their demand, improve her sales and improve the standard of living of her family of three children (all in school) and her husband. Notably, this will be Gilberte's third loan with KIVA; the first was successfully repaid and the second is in process of being repaid without issue. She dreams of becoming a great entrepreneur, working in imports and managing the business without loans in the future.

More information about this loan

This loan will help EdM provide energy-efficient wood or coal-burning stoves and gas stoves to retailers. EdM uses loaned funds to purchase stoves from local producers, then supplies the stoves to retailers on credit. Retailers, who typically own pre-existing small businesses and wish to add stoves to their inventories, are responsible for repaying the cost of the stoves to EdM in installments over the course of the loan term. These stoves help end users reduce their fuel expenses and avoid health complications caused by cooking over open fires. Since EdM pays the cost of transporting stoves from producers to retailers, and provides marketing support in the form of promotional posters and awareness-raising events, the organization adds a margin of between 4 and 7.5% to the cost the retailers pay for the stoves in order to make the project self-sufficient.
