Sirende Group's story

Irene is pictured on the right with her hand raised among her Sirende Group members. The twelve of them, six women and six men, are farmers in Chwele District. Farming supplies will be delivered to her on credit, consisting of the necessary materials to plant 1/2 acre of sweet potato, millet, and sorghum. Irene joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012 season and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Irene joined One Acre Fund to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer and to grow enough food for the family.

Irene reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about 6 bags of maize per 3/4 acre, but with her One Acre Fund loan during the Long Rains 2012 season, she harvested 6 1/2 bags per 1/2 acre. She plans to use future profits from the harvest to send her children to school and to save for the future. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive 1/2 an acre of agricultural supplies on credit. Irene’s group will receive 6 acres worth of supplies on credit.
