Peter is a father of two children aged six and four years and has been in active farming in his rural home for twenty years where he produces mainly maize and beans for the local market. Farming is the source of income though supplemented with a retail business he runs in the local market.
Peter has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to help him construct a dairy unit and buy a chuff-cutter. He believes he will earn enough income to enable him educate his children as well as improve the general living standards of the family.
Peter says lack of adequate capital and animal diseases are the greatest challenge smallholder farmers have.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
