Thoern is 46 years old living with her husband and five children in a rural village of the Kror Kor district. One of her children is still in school. Rice farming and cassava planting are the only main sources for her family’s income to make a living. To supplement the income, her husband makes palm juice. Engaging in this business for 25 years, the current business earns her family a daily income of about US$5 but she is able to save US$2 each day.
This is the fifth loan for Thoern with VisionFund. With the successful past loans, she has been able to better support her current business. Now she is applying for another loan. As the leader, she is going to use her portion to buy a decent vehicle for her family to use.
About VisionFund Cambodia
VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
