A 33-year-old mother of three children, one of whom remains in school, Nem is a local rice grower and watermelon planter on two hectares of land. To supplement the family income, her husband works for others for a fee. This business, which she has been with for 19 years, earns her about 41,500 KHR per day. This is the fourth loan for Nem with VisionFund (Kiva’s partner). She has completely repaid her previous loans already and she has managed to keep her children in school and stabilize her business. For now, she is seeking for a new loan of 2,000,000 KHR in order to buy watermelon seeds, fertilizer, and pesticide for her plants. She hopes that she can grow her watermelon on time and get more income so as she can grow rubber trees for latex collection for extra income.
About VisionFund Cambodia
VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
