Rauf is a 27-year-old man, very smart and full of energy. He raises seasonal fruits and vegetables in his garden and sells them. His monthly income is 300 AZN. His brother helps him to raise and sell the crops. He is married and has three children.

Raising crops has been his life project for the past five years, and this business brings him stable income that is the only financial source of support for the family. Rauf says that year to year, the climate has become more vigorous than in previous years, with especially hot summers and cold winters. In summer, the temperature often reaches 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and the main problem in the region is water for irrigation. Rauf is not able to build a water channel for his garden, by himself. This is quite an expensive process, which requires a labor force and special equipment.

When he heard about water loans, Rauf was extremely excited and applied for a 2,000 AZN loan. He will use this loan to pay for rental of special equipment, like a tractor, and for workers who will dig the land, for making a water channel.

About Aqroinvest:

Aqroinvest Credit Union was founded in 2001 by a group of 32 farmers from Imishli. It has since grown to become the largest credit union in Azerbaijan, owned by its more than 5,400 borrowers and boasting a portfolio of nearly US$12 million.
AqroInvest is focused on providing loans to the following groups of people: rural farmers, people living in distant southern villages with little or no access to finance and internally displaced people and refugees, many of whom lost their homes and livelihoods during the violent conflicts in the 1990s.

In May 2011, Aqroinvest started a new project with Kiva proving higher education loans to students. The project gives students the support and financing they need to continue their education and helps pay for tuition fees at various universities in Azerbaijan. Aqroinvest is the first credit union in the country to offer students loans.
