Usman, 45, is in his second year as a Babban Gona member. Last year, with the help of a Babban Gona loan he was able to access high quality fertilizer, improved seeds and mechanization services, which all improved his productivity and profits. This year, like all Babban Gona members, Usman has the opportunity to increase his yield and profit 3 times as much as the average Nigerian farmer through a Babban Gona loan which gives him access to high quality inputs such as improved seeds and fertilizers as well as storage services that give him the ability to sell his maize at a premium price. Usman is looking forward to growing his business in Pampaida village, Kaduna, and has his sights set on reaching a record yield 10 Mt per hectare this year.

Usman is confident that in addition to providing financial support for his family of 16 and improving their livelihood, his improved crops will benefit his children's health; by eating toxin-free maize they can lower their chances of contracting harmful diseases. In the next five years, he hopes the success of his farm will have brought about a permanent improvement in his family's standard of living through access to better education and a healthier lifestyle.

More information about this loan

This loan is aimed at helping smallholder farmers. The farmers are divided into Trust Groups and deliver training and development services, inputs like seeds on credit and post-harvest marketing services. This Kiva loan will thus be used to provide borrowers with needed goods or services, as opposed to cash or financial credit. This system increases farmers’ yields up to 4 times the national average. In addition, Babban Gona markets its farmers’ produce to premium markets over the course of the year, ensuring that they receive the best price possible for their produce and have a steady flow of income year round. Kiva loans are used to help Babban Gona expand its services to more rural areas in Northern Nigeria. Babban Gona posts loans before the inputs are provided so there is a chance that farmers will change their input package after the loan is posted. As a result, the loan amount may slightly change after you fund the loan, and any difference will be repaid to you when the first loan repayment is made. By supporting this loan, you’re providing farmers with the opportunity to increase their yields.
