Communal group 'Palomitas Blancas' (the name means 'White Doves') is starting its sixth cycle with field partner Pro Mujer, in the framework of the focus centre of Patacamaya. It has nine members and an executive board, with Hilda as president. The members of the group are engaged in various activities, among them quinoa sales, grocery shop, trousers sales, cattle sales, an artesan's workshop, and a sewing workshop. This loan will thus benefit a group of very small entrepreneurs with diverse businesses. Hilda tells us that she has been working with Pro Mujer for five cycles. She got to know this field partner thanks to a spokesperson, who came to visit her at her house. Hilda has a sewing workshop, a trade she learned from her husband three years ago. She then decided to have a workshop of her own. She needs this loan in order to increase her working capital and buy a sewing machine. She will buy it from wholesale sellers in La Paz and then sell what she sews at her home. The income Hilda derives from her business enables her to help with household expenses, since she is married. When asked what she likes about working with Pro Mujer, she talks about the training received on topics such as health and credit options.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
