Carlos Arturo is 45 years old. He is a peasant living in the Roblalito settlement, in the municipality of Sonsón, Colombia. For over thirty years he has been making a living in agriculture, along with his family.
He is married and has three children whom he watches over so he can guarantee them the best possible living conditions and a good upbringing.
Every day Carlos starts his tasks - watering, weeding and putting fertiliser on his crops.
He dreams of building a house on the land he inherited from his parents so he can give his family a decent place to live.
As a result of climate change which has significantly affected the region, Carlos' crops are now in danger so he asks God that his harvest will not be fruitless. The money he earns from this work are the only source of income for his family. In order to have good results Carlos is applying for a loan to invest in supplies that will allow him to put down more fertiliser and generate a higher income to sustain his household.

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
