José Guillermo
José, 37, is a farmworker who has made a living in agriculture since his youth. He learned the work thanks to his parents, who lived in the country all their lives.

He has grown coffee, one of the most marketed crops in the region, since he was 14 years old. His biggest challenge has been struggling against the coffee crisis, price instability, and pests that constantly invade his crops.

His biggest dream is to be able to give his children, ages 12 and 14, a good education, for which he's considering the possibility of relocating them to the city because the area school is very far from the farm.

He's requesting a loan to invest in buying fertilizer with the goal of getting a good harvest and paying his two employees who help him with the farming labor.

He hopes to be able to improve his quality of life and that of his family.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
