The “SUMA CHUYMA” community association will begin its fourth cycle with Pro Mujer, as part of the Centro Focal de Los Andes. It is made up of eight members, and managed by a Board, with Señora Placida as President. The members of the community association work in various areas, including selling sandwiches, a neighborhood store, selling dresses, selling food, selling drinks, selling hot dogs, a stationary store and selling mobile phones.

The lean they receive will benefit micro-entrepreneurs such as Señora Placida. She sells that she has been a member of Pro Mujer for two years, and joined after being invited by a friend who was a member of the organization. At the moment, she has a local store. She explains that she opened this business when she noticed the lack of this service in her neighborhood.

The loan she is now requesting will be used to increase her capital (buying canned goods, oils and preserves), which she will purchase from distribution companies and then sell in her store. This work enables her to earn a living and support her family as much as possible, as she is married and has three children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she says that she likes the health and savings part.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
