Joseph is a forty-year-old farmer in Kitale county in Kenya where he lives with his wife and three children who are all schooling. He has been farming for the past twenty years, producing milk, maize and vegetables which he sells at the local market in his area. He runs a mini-retail shop as an additional source of income.
He is requesting a 31,200 KES loan from Juhudi kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow, which will provide him with more milk products and earn him extra income that will help him boost his living standards and pay for his children’s education. He hopes to have five good quality dairy cows in the next five years to enable him to sell his milk wholesale.
Lack of readily available markets, diseases and poor roads are his major challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
