Lucy is a 34-year-old farmer in Ndaragwa county in Kenya where she lives with her husband and two children who are both schooling. Lucy has been in farming for the past 10 years producing vegetables and horticultural products which she sells at the local market in her area.
Lucy is requesting a 20,000 KES loan from Juhudi Kilimo which she will use to purchase a water tank for irrigation that will help her water her crops and provide her with higher yields and thus more income to help uplift her living standards. She will use some of the money to pay for her children's schooling.
Lucy hopes to have enough water storage for domestic use and crops in the next five years. Drought and unstable markets are her major challenges in farming.
Lucy believes that there is a great future for small scale farmers working with Juhudi Kilimo.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
