Berta Luz is 59 years old. She is a farmer who was displaced with her family by violence committed by groups of outlaws. Because of this, they live in the town of Yarumal, Colombia. That is where they started a new life. Her husband has been a farmer since he was young and he was able to get a job at a farm where he does agricultural work.
For two years, Berta, at a friend's suggestion, started making arepas to sell door to door. Right now, she produces 200 arepas a day which she distributes to restaurants and cafeterias in her community.
Today she is seeking a loan to buy an electric grinder, which will help her cut down the preparation time and physical effort, as well as to buy grills and corn. Her biggest dream is to make her business into a micro-business so she can create a source of employments and guarantee her four children better educational opportunities.

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
