Mary is a 45-year-old farmer in Kitale county, in Kenya, where she lives with her husband and seven children, two of whom are still schooling. She has been in farming for the past nine years, producing milk, maize, and poultry products which she sells at the local market. She runs a green grocery store as an additional source of income.
Mary is requesting a KES 40,000 loan from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase poultry birds. She will sell the products and earn extra income to help her uplift her livelihood and also pay for her children’s schooling.
She aspires to buy another dairy cow in the next five years. Poor transport networks and unreliable markets for her products are her major challenges in farming. Mary is very thankful to Juhudi Kilimo for giving her the loan.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
