Salina is a 31-year-old farmer in Kitale county in Kenya where she lives with her husband and three children who are all schooling. Salina has been in farming for the past 15 years producing maize, beans, milk and poultry products which she sells at the local market in her area. She runs a mini-retail shop as an additional source of income.
Salina is requesting a 31,200 KES loan from Juhudi kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She will sell the milk and earn extra income which will help boost her family’s income and living standards. She will use some of the money to pay for her children’s schooling. Salina aspires to purchase two more dairy cows and expand her farm in the next five years.
Diseases, unreliable rainfall and fluctuation of prices are her major challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
