Nichola is a 39-year-old farmer in Kitale County, Kenya. He lives with his wife and seven children, five of whom are in school. Nichola has been in farming for the past 14 years, producing milk, maize and vegetables, which he sells at the local market in his area.
He is requesting a 52,000 KES loan from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow, which will provide him with more milk and earn him extra income that will help him boost his living standards and pay for his children’s education. He hopes to have five good-quality dairy cows in the next five years.
Lack of a readily available market and poor roads are Nichola's major challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
